PM2.5: A Liver Cancer Risk Comparable to Habitual Alcohol Consumption
PM2.5: A Liver Cancer Risk Comparable to Habitual Alcohol Consumption
PM2.5 particulate matter may cause as much liver damage as chronic alcohol abuse! Gastroenterologist Dr. Qian Zhenghong recently treated two men in their 80s, both diagnosed with liver cancer. Neither had a history of alcohol use or common risk factors like Hepatitis B or C. However, both maintained home shrines where they burned three incense sticks daily, neglecting adequate ventilation. This long-term exposure to PM2.5, inhaled into the lungs and ultimately accumulating in the liver (the body's detoxification organ), is suspected to have contributed to their liver inflammation, increased liver burden, and ultimately, their liver cancer.
